Mid Week Check In (Week 32): Writing and Whittling Words

I'm greatly looking forward to returning to Social Media on 1 September! But, my newly adopted way of periodically posting on SOCIALS will likely remain the same!

I'm also excited to say, I'm planning an online ongoing written study series for KWBS,  I'll be using more than a few books from The Bible Study Studio Library!

I'm not sure if you know it or not, but I've been working with words for some time now, it all kinda started with me pasting words down in high school for Graphic Arts at Yates Vocational School, which is now The Entrepreneurship and Innovation Center. I designed my first professional business card at the age of fourteen. Not long after that folks would commission me to create and compose calligraphy for the envelopes for their wedding invitations.

I majored in Fashion Design and after my daughter was born I was granted a scholarship to attend what was then Nashville State Tech for their two year Visual Communications program. The two year VisCom program at Nashville Tech help me land a job designing advertisements for a weekly Franklin news paper. I not only designed ads, but I also designed special section spreads and tabloids. 

After my Dad insisted, I move out of town for my safety, I worked for Murfreesboro City Schools and McDonalds before working at the Daily News Journal as a copy editor, who also put the paper to bed every night. It was also my assignment to select and edit photographs, write headlines, and rewrite stories. 

But, hear is what most folks don't know or understand: every single mass produced printed publication has a BUDGET and this BUDGET is strictly adhered to. So, the job of a copy editor is to whittle words already written, likely by someone else. The copy editor's job is to make the story fit the allotted budget by whittling away words, complete sentences and paragraphs, all the while hopefully considering and maintaining the integrity of the story already worked and written.
